Down a drive off the main road, this beautiful old building dates from the mid 1850s, and was for many years the home for Joshua Fielden, MP for Todmorden. who had interests in social reform. In the 1930s it became a hotel, but during the second world war it was used as a base for Canadian soldiers. Later the building became a school for the deaf, before opening again as a hotel in 1988. Very much an upmarket country hotel, with large wood panelled rooms and high ceilings, it is well known for its Cloisters Restaurant, which serves excellent food. The bar is next to this, and has wonderful views over the Surrey countryside. Only keg lager and bottled beer is sold, but at least a Surrey brewery, Hogs Back, is to be found among the bottles. The building is licensed for weddings. These are very popular, which is why the restaurant is closed Saturday lunchtimes, although snacks are available in the bar. The restaurant is open between 12 and 2 except Saturdays and between 7 and 9:30 all days. There is also a Spa and Health Club on site. A separate bar is to be found in the Leisure centre, and this has sports TV.
