Named after Sir James Scarlett, the first Baron of Abinger, the pub was built as two cottages in 1620, becoming a pub in 1907. It is the epitome of the traditional country pub with a stone-flagged floor and oak beams. There are several different drinking and eating areas. Immediately in front of the small bar dispense area there are stone slabs on the floor. This leads to the main bar area; this has wooden flooring. The highlight here is an inglenook containing a lovely open fire. Behind here is another cosy room with low ceilings. To the right of the bar is another room, this one with parquet flooring and another fire. This leads to a smaller room with a couple of tables and a dartboard. Throughout the pub are good wooden tables to sit at. Very fine quality food is served from 12-3 and 6-9 Monday to Saturday and from 12-6 Sunday. Daily specials are chalked up on a board. The guest beer will be a seasonal ale from Badger. The pub opens at 10:30 on Tuesday and Thursday for coffee. Outside is a very pleasant garden.
