This old inn was mentioned by Samuel Pepys and was formerly called the Magpie. It is now named after John Symonds, an Epsom yeoman who in 1677 discovered a well nearby, with waters that were said to have medicinal properties. Now one can try the properties of the well looked after beers in this pleasant pub with one central bar. Etched windows give a good view of passing traffic, and there is a long bench in the front to sit on. The front area with polished wood floor leads to a more secluded carpeted lounge area to the rear. There is an open fire and the obligatory scenes of old Derby races. Darts can be played.
