Badger K&B Sussex, Best
A 17 th century, tile hung, brick built pub very close to the Sussex border, the Wheatsheaf has been refurbished following a change of tenant. This low beamed pub retains a cosy feel and has several pleasant drinking and eating areas off the little bar. There are three real fires including an attractive inglenook, and some of the original flooring remains. The pub is virtually no smoking with only a couple of tables and a small back room, with an old settle, designated for smokers. The beer quality has seen a significant improvement since the change of ownership and there is a big focus on high quality food from an extensive and imaginative menu. The pub caters mostly for a "wellheeled" and up market clientele, but all are made welcome; cyclists and walkers will find it a useful watering hole and families can take advantage of the large beer garden during the clement weather. Food is served from 12 2.30 all week including Sunday and 6.30 9.30 Monday to Saturday. Children are welcome away from the bar. Note that the pub is not open on Sunday evenings. Formerly a Watney pub, it was bought by King & Barnes in the late 1980s and is now owned by Badger. It still retains a fine King & Barnes pub sign. (see above) Symbols explained
